Palawan Island has historically been the home of multiple Indigenous groups of Palawan, Batak, Tabangwa, and Taut Bato’o people who practised animist religions. Later, the coastal regions of the island were by groups known as Palaweños. The island and its inhabitants were later subjugated by the Ma’i nation based in Mindoro.
Palawan is the largest island of an archipelago province of the same name located in the Mimaropa region of the island nation of the Philippines in the western Pacific Ocean. The island is located between the Mindoro island to its northeast and the Borneo island to its southwest in between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea.
Before the Islamization of Palawan, the island was a part of the Ma’i nation and its vassal state – the Sandao and most of its inhabitants practised the anito religion. The Molbog people who had previously inhabited the southern part of the province, the Agutaynon people of the Agutaya island and the Cuynon people of the Cuyno island settled here and brought their religion – Islam with them.
The Spanish were the first of the nations to colonize the Philippines and started with missionary missions which clashed with local communities before going on to conquer the whole island. They were followed by the Americans who established control in the region in the early twentieth century following the American – Philippines War.
